Charles V dies
Charles V dies in Spain on 21 September 1558. At that moment his son Philip resides in the Netherlands. This is why he organizes a magnificent funeral procession along the streets of Brussels on 29 and 30 September 1558.
Plantin's first big work
This album is Plantin's first big work. He establishes his reputation as a publisher, even though he only prints the short text. The 12 meter long procession reads like a cartoon. Everyone - including at home - can experience the lijkstoet of Karel V. The work is sold as a roll or as a book, in the five languages of Charles V’s empire: Dutch, French, German, Spanish and Italian.
