Portait of Antwerp in the Golden Age
In Antwerp portrayed you will find a selection of thirty important maps and city views from the period between 1520 and 1610. The catalogue offers a majestic portrait of the city. It is a series of undoubted masterpieces, including the oldest city map of Antwerp from the Felix Archive, or the earliest bird’s eye view of Antwerp from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, only two copies of which are known to have survived. But that’s not all: there is also the masterpiece of Virgilius Bononiensis, which appears in just about every publication on Antwerp. And an exceptional drawing – which is never given out on loan – showing various expansions of the city, from the State Archives in Brussels. There is even an anonymous view of the city of Antwerp and the surrounding countryside, with breached dikes.
