‘Missing Books Անյայտ աղբիւրներ’
A mobile installation by Garine Gokceyan (PhD in Arts, Sint Lucas Antwerp). ‘Missing Books’ talks about underrepresented and often ‘invisible’ scripts. This designer experiences first-hand what it means not to find books as guidelines to design, and to discusses typography in her mother tongue/ script, namely West Armenian.

Mini exhibition on languages and script
See the work of undergraduate students from Sint Lucas Antwerp and artistic newcomers from Stadscanvas. They took the elective course ‘A multilingual world: sociopolitical and artistic’ and also tackled an artistic assignment. The results are self-made paper zines, digital images and some calligraphic works that reflect the diversity and creativity of their creators.

Printing demos
Our printers demonstrate a replica of a 16th-century printing press. They print a poem created especially for Mother Tongues Day.

Old books up close
You will have the chance to see ancient books up close in a ‘Show & Tell’. The curator of ancient prints and manuscripts, Zanna Van Loon, will display the finest works, printed in different languages and scripts, such as Arabic, Hebrew and Old Syriac works and Plantijn's absolute masterpiece, the Royal Bible in 5 languages.

Make a zine. Or co-translate a poem
Visual artist Cifel Hüseyin is working continuously on one collaborative Zine with the audience on the importance of language in people's lives. You are cordially invited to co-write Plantijn's sonnet ‘Worldly Happiness’ in as many languages as possible. Starting in Frisian.
Programme at Sint Lucas
Expo Letter proofs from letter foundries and printers. Multilingualism in textbooks. 1800-1940
View a selection of old printer's manuals and typescripts. The focus is on typesetting in various languages and scripts, in the period 1800-1940. Although typesetters in the 19th century did not master all kinds of languages, there was a desire to deliver flawless and high-quality typesetting. The manuals name the different characters in the alphabet, and the common characters for accented letters. They give an overview of splitting rules, and teach what conventions there are for the use of punctuation and numerals. The letter proofs in the showcases show which typefaces (in which scripts) were on the market and could be used for books.
