In our reading room, you can consult or study numerous authentic collection items. You will find valuable early printed books and manuscripts, archival documents, and a rich collection of prints and drawings. Research on the Plantin collection is also available here.

There’s no better place for deep-diving into history than our reading room. It’s your chance to get a front-row seat to unique prints, drawings, rare books, and archives. Via the reading room, you gain access to:

  • The archives
  • The library
  • Copper plates, woodblocks, and typography

  • Historical objects (available upon request)
  • Early printed books

How to consult collection items.

Admission and registration in the reading room is free of charge. You can register via this form (Anet). Upon your first visit, please present a valid ID. Once registered, you will receive a library card. For every subsequent visit, simply sign in with your library card and complete the attendance register.

To ensure you have a seat in the reading room, please make a reservation at least 48 hours in advance using this form (Supersaas).

  • Select one or more time slots.
  • Reserve the works you wish to consult at the same time (see below).

Unable to attend? Please cancel your reservation and notify the reading room staff via readingroomplantinmoretus@antwerpen.be.

Only registered readers can reserve works.

Are you looking for an item that is not available digitally? Please fill out a call slip for each item and hand it to the reading room staff. They will retrieve the requested works for you.

Requesting scans and photos

You may request photographs and scans of collection items. Please submit your request in writing to:

Please include the following in your request:

  • The work: author, title, and catalogue number.
  • The purpose: the intended use of the photograph and/or the details of the publication.
  • The format: how you would like the image to be delivered (digital (TIFF/JPEG), ektachrome, or a black-and-white or colour print).

The price depends on whether a photographer needs to be commissioned, the type of image required, and the intended purpose of the publication. Images will only be dispatched upon receipt of payment. For the processing of your request, the photography, and the delivery, please allow for a lead time of approximately three weeks.

For study purposes, you are permitted to take photographs using your own camera. Please note that the use of a flash or a tripod is not allowed.

Reproducing existing images

If you wish to reproduce existing image material, please contact the reading room staff.
