Requesting a loan

We aim to show the collection of the Museum Plantin-Moretus to as many people as possible. That's why the museum also lends its artworks and objects to other museums and art institutions, subject to some conditions. This page provides all necessary information about how to request a loan.

Please note: there is a moratorium on loans until 2026; we will only accept applications from 2027 onwards.

Step 1: search our databases

Much of our collection has been digitized. Looking for a specific work or object? Search our collection online.
Didn't find what you were looking for? Contact the Reading Room.

Step 2: submit a loan request

In order for us to carefully review your loan request, we ask you to provide a complete and detailed formal request. Formal loan requests must contain the following information:

About the exhibition

  • Name and address of the institution
  • Name and contact details of the person handling the application
  • Exhibition title, duration and location
  • Description of the exhibition concept
  • Relevance and importance of the requested loan within the exhibition
  • Specific location of installation, with facility report in the case of a first request

About the desired loan

  • Name of the artist
  • Title of the artwork
  • Object number
  • Whether or not you require images

Step 3: submit your request

You can request the loan in writing by email or letter no later than 6 months before the start of the loan. This time is utilized to thoroughly assess the request and, in the event of a positive response, to carefully prepare the artworks or objects for their journey.

Please address your request to the director of the Museum Plantin-Moretus.
Send an email to loansMPM@antwerpen.be

Or send a letter to:

Conditions & fees

There are a few conditions attached to the loan: the borrower is responsible for all costs associated with the loan, such as insurance, condition checks, conservation treatments, packaging, transport, installation and supervision.

In the case of fragile objects, the Plantin-Moretus Museum requires the work to be accompanied by a courier. We also charge for these costs.
