The women of the Plantin-Moretus house

Meet the women in the house and business of the Plantin-Moretus family. Women have contributed to the success of this family business for centuries. They tell us about their roles within the family and society. This encourages us to reflect on our own views of the role of women.

The women of the Plantin-Moretus house

Guided tour for adults

During the guided tour, these multifaceted women take centre stage in different ways. You meet mothers, daughters, housewives, domestic staff and business leaders, all of whom get a chance to tell their stories.

Luckily, we do not have to invent these stories ourselves. Museum Plantin-Moretus has more than 200 metres of archival material. This includes thousands of sheets of paper with letters, notes, diaries, bookkeeping journals and ledgers, and administrative documents. All that paper contains traces of the many women who lived and worked here over the centuries.
