The museum

In 1576, Plantin moved his printing works to the Vrijdagmarkt. His family worked and lived there for three hundred years. They expanded the Gulden Passer into a magnificent patrician residence. The Moretus family cherished their printing works, which had become part of their heritage. The last owner, Edward Moretus, sold the house to the city of Antwerp in 1876. Unesco World Heritage

The UNESCO World Heritage List includes more than 1,200 sites worldwide. In 2005, Plantin-Moretus became the very first museum to be added to that list. In fact, four years earlier, its business and family archives had already been inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. Etched in bold letters into the memory of humanity.
